Maria Sharapova repeated her French Open final scoreline against Sara Errani in her first game of the WTA Championships on Tuesday, taking the match 6-3 6-2 despite early resistance.
Sharapova, coming into the Championships seeded second, had to grind down a dogged Errani in the opening throes and was broken back to 2-2 before the Russian stepped up the gas. Indeed, groundstrokes proved the key as Sharapova pinned her opponent to the back of the court and forced a break in the sixth game before taking the first set.
Looking to recapture the title she won eight years ago, Sharapova continued her form into the second set and proved unstoppable – much like at Roland Garros earlier this season.
Errani served out her final game well but could do nothing to prevent Sharapova blasting her way to victory to take top sport in the White Group in Istanbul.
